  • Ella is approximately 85% effective when taken as directed within 5 days after unprotected sex. Its effectiveness does not decrease between the first and the fifth day after intercourse.

  • Levonorgestrel is a hormone used in many emergency contraceptive pills, like Plan B One-Step and Take Action. It works by preventing ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg, but is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

  • Levonorgestrel is most effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex, with efficacy rates between 75% and 89%. Its effectiveness decreases the longer you wait to take it after unprotected sex

  • Both Ella and Levonorgestrel work to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, primarily by inhibiting or delaying ovulation. Ella (Ulipristal Acetate) can also make the uterus less receptive to implantation. Levonorgestrel increases the thickness of cervical mucus, which may prevent sperm from reaching an egg. Ella is known to be effective closer to the ovulation window than Levonorgestrel.
